“I was not expecting the turnout to be this huge,” says Danielle Edwards, a dedicated and versatile reporter with CBC Halifax in Nova Scotia.

A busy journalist, Edwards works as a web writer, online reporter, and news reader. Her career has spanned several prominent Canadian newsrooms, such as The Canadian Press and The Globe and Mail. She has made a significant impact in the field of journalism, standing out not just for her journalistic prowess but for her unwavering dedication to telling the stories that matter.

With an interest in the media dating back to high school, Danielle had always loved to read and write. Danielle continued her media studies at the University of Guelph Humber in Toronto and later earned her Master of Journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa.

At CBC News in Halifax, Edwards is known for her in-depth reporting on issues that impact the Nova Scotia community. She says she takes care to approach each story with empathy and a commitment to uncovering the truth.

She says her work is not just about reporting facts; it’s about giving a voice to those who might otherwise go unheard.

Edwards added she feels connecting with people and telling their stories with sensitivity and accuracy is a foundational part of her journalism process.

The NABJ Convention, says Edwards, “was a valuable experience for me.”

Overall, Edwards notes that the convention is full of opportunities. She says, “I enjoyed being in the presence of so many wonderful, very skilled journalists, who also reinforced my overall impression that the conference is a great place to fellowship with other journalists.”

The major session highlight for Danielle was a panel discussion of the United States justice system for young Black kids and how foster care works in the United States. She also attended a panel on investigative reporting. “The insights from that panel would greatly enrich my journalism career; I learned some investigative techniques from the session.”

Another highlight for Edwards was the presence of the former United States President, Donald Trump, being interviewed by two NABJ members.

Trump’s responses to the questions turned out to be some of the most talked about at the NABJ conference.

“Being able to see the chat with Trump was a highlight for me,” says Edwards.

Says Edwards, “I predicted what President Donald Trump was going to start off with. I asked myself, what question would he decide to start cutting off on, and he immediately started his way.”

Danielle Edwards hopes to incorporate the insights and knowledge gained from the NABJ conference into her reporting and contribute to the rich tapestry of Canadian journalism.
